Less Stuff, More Sex

Less Stuff, More Sex A few years back, during our first tour of the Mapleleaf North, we stood amid alphabetical rows of endless bookshelves, basking in a Calgary bookstores fluorescent glow, answering questions at the end of our talk in front of a few hundred smiling Canadians. Thenâ€"a heckler. It happens in almost every city. Someone projects their fears, expectations, and insecurities onto us: You guys arent real minimalists because You drive a car. You own a smartphone. You sell books. You whatever. It happens so frequently that were now inoculated to the criticism. Whenever you do something meaningful, people will judge you. So what? Let them. Judgment is but a mirror reflecting the insecurities of the person whos doing the judging. But this timeâ€"in this Albertan bookshopâ€"was different. Toward the back of the crowd, a man in his mid-forties raised his hand and, in an aggressive tone, said, I dont have a questionâ€"I have comment. The crowd hushed, waited. I had to get rid of my bed because of you two, the heckler said. Excuse me? Ryan said. Because of this whole minimalism thing, my wife and I had to get rid of our bed, he said, louder this time, furrowing his brow and gesturing toward the woman at his right. Why? Joshua asked. Weve never told anyone to get rid of their bed. I own a bed. Ryan owns a bed. I wouldntâ€" I dont think you understand me! he interrupted, his arms gesticulating wildly, a manic look on his features. My wife found your website earlier this year, and we had to get rid of our bed! But why wouldâ€" Our marriage was ending, he cut in again. After two decades, we had become roommates, not a married couple. We were staying together just for the kids. The entire crowd was rubbernecking now, staring at the couple. Then my wife found your website, and she started simplifying without telling me. She was letting go of everything that didnt add value to our lives! Uh-oh, Ryan muttered. Thats right! She found your 20/20 Rule. And then your 90/90 Rule. She was even playing the Minimalism Game with her friends. Hmm, Joshua pondered aloud. In just a few months, I noticed something was different. Our house was cleaner, tidier, less cluttered. But, more important, something was different with my wife. She seemed happier, calmer, less stressed. And she was being nicer to me, which forced me to notice how umm not nice I was being to her. And to our kids. And to everyone in my life. But then I realized I could be nice, too. My wife had changed, so that meant I could changeâ€"it was my decision. We both nodded and continued listening. Maybe this wasnt a heckler after all. For the first time in years, with much of our excess junk out of the way, my wife and I started talking again. We were actually communicating with each other. We started having discussions we hadnt had in years: Dreams. Goals. Priorities. Everything was on the table. A huge smile broke across the mans glowing face. Then something amazing happened: we started having sex again. Lots of sex. Crazy sex. Great sex! So much sex that our teenage kids complained that our bed was too loud, he clapped his hands to mimic their headboard banging against a wall: Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Laughter overcame the crowd. So we got rid of our bed, too. And with less stuff, we found ourselvesâ€"we found the couple who had been buried under decades of clutter. Subscribe to The Minimalists via email.

Une fois que  (once that) is a type of conjunctive phrase that does not take the subjunctive because it expresses facts, which are considered certain; this makes the subjunctive unnecessary in this case. On the other hand, there are many more conjunctive phrases that do express uncertainty and, thus, do require the subjunctive. Future Tense With These Conjunctive Phrases, Not Subjunctive The subjunctive  mood  is dedicated to expressing actions or ideas that are uncertain and subjective, such as will/wanting, emotion, doubt, possibility, necessity, judgment. Une fois que and other conjunctive phrases like it are usually followed by the  future  tense, not the subjunctive, as illustrated below: Je lachà ¨terai une fois quil arrivera.Ill buy it once he arrives.Mangeons quand il arrivera.Lets eat when he arrives.Une fois que tu aura compris, tout sera plus facile.Once youve understood, everything will seem easier. Brian Billick Free Essays

No one understands success better than Brian Billick. It is not because of his own achievements which include leading an NFL team to a Super Bowl victory, it is because leadership fascinates him. One of Brian’s most noted feats was leading the Baltimore Ravens to a 34-7 win over the New York Giants in the 2000 Super Bowl XXXV. We will write a custom essay sample on Brian Billick or any similar topic only for you Order Now Making the victory so much more rewarding was the fact that Brian took over the role as head coach for the Ravens a year earlier when they were ranked as one of the NFL’s most depressing teams. Two words are synonymous with Brian Billick – passion and accountability. Those two traits are what steers a person to success. Brian was born in Ohio but his family moved to California. He learned success early as an athlete at Redlands High School where he played both football and basketball. He etched his name into the state record books with 21 career interceptions, a record that has yet to be broken. Following high school, Brian was a freshman linebacker at the Air Force Academy before transferring to Brigham Young University where as a tight end, Brian earned an honorable mention in the 1976 All-America honors. He also earned a Bachelors Degree in Communications and currently endows a communications scholarship at the university. In 1977, Brian made it to the National Football League. He was picked in the 11th round of the NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers and then traded to the Dallas Cowboys. However, as a player, Brian never got the opportunity to hit the field. Instead, he was hired as the assistant director of public relations for San Francisco for the next two years. He spent much of the 1980s coaching college teams such as San Diego State University, Utah State University and Stanford University. â€Å"BRIAN BILLICK† Page 2 As a coach, he quickly learned there is no â€Å"I† in team and that was something he instilled in each player. To Brian, coaching is more than teaching the plays of the game, it is teaching the values that make a team player. The success of a team is determined by working together towards a common goal. Each player must have the passion. As with any goal, reaching it requires 100 percent dedication. If a person can not commit to every aspect that comes with the territory then they lack the passion needed to survive. The other important influence in a successful team is accountability. The task requires working together without selfishness but a person must also be willing to take responsibility for one’s actions. Brian feels it is a sign of respect for the team. Brian practices what he preaches. He joined the Ravens in 1999 and led the team into post- season playoffs every year since except twice and he takes accountability for those two years. As the team’s leader, he felt responsible but it did not discourage him from finding new ways to guide the team in the right direction. Throughout his career, Brian earned the reputation of being more than just a great leader but also a motivator. He knows the values that make a person a leader are something that can be taught. Bringing out those qualities in a person by influencing their behavior, attitude and actions are what leadership is all about. Brian began his NFL coaching career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1992 when he was first hired as the tight end coach and by the following year, he was named offensive coordinator for the Vikings. His leadership skills brought out success in the Vikings’ camp and in 1994, the team captured the NFC Central title. He remained with the Vikings until the end of the 1998 season. â€Å"BRIAN BILLICK† Page 3 In 1999, he was hired as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Basically a new franchise founded four years earlier, the Ravens were struggling as a team. In Brian’s first year as coach, the Ravens won eight games. That was more wins than they had totaled in their first four years. The Ravens’ defense finished second overall in the NFL. In his second year with the team, Baltimore finished 16-4 overall in the 2000 season. They crushed their opponents in the playoffs and became only the fourth wild card team to go on to win the Super Bowl when they blew by the New York Giants. But domination had little to do with it. That October, the Ravens were on what looked to be a downward spiral when they failed to score a touchdown in five consecutive games. It was Brian who kept the team unified and focused on the primary goal. The team returned to the Super Bowl in 2001 but fell short when they lost 27-10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was still a remarkable feat considering they were one of the youngest teams in the NFL with 19 rookies that season. In 2003, Brian put the young team back in the playoffs. They led the NFL in rushing and ranked third in the league in defense. The next year, the Ravens were one game away from making the playoffs. The 2005 and 2006 seasons were disappointing for the Ravens but things may turn around in 2007 since they hired five new coaches to the franchise. Brian’s leadership skills have an impact on more than just his players. In the seven years that he has been head coach of the Ravens, three of his assistants have moved on to become NFL head coaches. In 2001, Brian’s defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis joined Cincinnati and his linebacker coach Jack Del Rio joined Jacksonville. Three years later, he lost another defensive coordinator, Mike Nolan, to San Francisco. â€Å"BRIAN BILLICK† Page 4 It was shortly after winning the Super Bowl in 2000 that Brian, along with Dr. James A. Peterson wrote the book: Competitive Leadership: Twelve Principles for Success. This book talks about the keys to being successful and being a leader, not only on the football field but in life in general. The book also talks about how leadership is not about authority. Being a strong leader is being willing to always learn more and not think you already have all of the answers. An important key in any leader is the ability to ask questions. It is not about being perfect, it is about being effective. Brian also spends a large majority of his time speaking to corporations about leadership skills. Brian also spends time improving the community and doing his part for charities. NFL Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh joined Brian and Dr. Peterson in writing the book: Finding the Winning Edge. This book focuses more on football and is a guide for developing a winning NFL team. Despite his coaching schedule, charity work and public speaking engagements, Brian still finds enjoyment in studying leadership. Whether it be from hands on experience on the field or from the history of past leaders, learning builds an effective leader. Brian values education and it is interesting to note that he was once a contestant on the game show Jeopardy and The Match Game in 1977. At age 53, Brian continues to help others build the characteristics needed to succeed. Along with the success comes the ability to be a leader, a teacher, a coach and a mentor. All of the qualities that make a person strong enough to take on that role can be learned through motivation. Brian prides himself on passion and accountability – the two traits that make him an admired leader. SOURCES The Baltimore Ravens. â€Å"Brian Billick. † (2006). Political Economy and Citizen Empowerment †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Political Economy and Citizen Empowerment. Answer: Introduction: Emiratisation is a government dynamism by the United Arab Emirates to their people for them employment in public or private sector. It is an effective manner of employing more people by giving training and employment. Private sector organization under the Emiratisation process MoHRE is the establishment of a monitory announcement and employment opportunity for the Emirati and that proposal implemented over the health and safety process of Arab Emirates. This is a concern strategic planning under the Ministerial Decree no. 711 that mainly concerned with the constructional and industrial works that have assigned people over there under the contract of this law. 500 workers are not getting their work permit unless health and safety officer has assigned them (Alabdelkarim, Muftah Hodgson, 2014). For the private sector company, they have to authorize certain Emirati to continue this process as well. In Ministerial Decree no 710 almost 1000 people are joined for the data entry process and the minimum of two UAE citizens have to be present in this list of workers. The law is a kind of stagnancy as without the assigned work placement form the authority workers cannot do their work. Emiratisation is a kind of influence that MoHRE has implemented for the better development of Emirati people. This is a kind of privilege that private and public sector companies have offered to their natives (Thompson Wissink, 2016). This is a good step to provide employment and mitigate the unemployment rate. As the main employment section is health and safety so by that time people are quite aware of the process of safeties and they follow this process in rest of their life. Emiratisation is a form of affirmative action as the process educates UAE youth to provide them enough knowledge in developmental change and give them proper training and organization engagement to make the best fit for the organization (Goby et al. 2017). Employees career development and corporate opportunities eventually depend on their progress in life so this effective process of performance made that affirmative behavior in between the UAE people. Gulf experts of UAE are the ma concern for the private sector of UAE. Private sectors are hiring those Emiratis under the Gulfanisation. This process brings more talent in UAE private sectors and their production level also enhances the company reputation as well. There are certain strong performers and executives in Gulf division, those can relate the business in an effective way and enhance the external market of the company. Emiratis will get a chance to earn more money as incentive in private sector organization. The private sectors companies are now providing enough safety to their employees that is the main reason behind Emiratis are getting interest to work on private sector companies. Private sector companies have provided 30% more wages than the government that is another reason Emiratis are interested to do private jobs (Aljanahi, 2017). UAE government noticed that fact that people in private sector love to involve in the public sector for certain reasons like more holidays, higher salary, short working duration and great advantages. Private jobs are offering more monetary value and provide strong and sustainable job security so that employees can feel same protection as public sector has given to them. For the appraisal of more incentive, people are getting involved with private sector rather than public sector. This may encourage efficient Emiratis to join private companies. Private sector companies under Emiratisation have to follow certain employment programs like red carpet service, specialized consultation, complaint system and qualification and training programs. All private sector companies not have this set up or time to roll on this process as this is quite time consuming process. Thus, Emiratisation is not taken care by those private sector companies. Academic Dishonesty 10 Essays

Academic Dishonesty 10 Essays Academic Dishonesty 10 Essay Academic Dishonesty 10 Essay services and methods to reduce the amount of academic cheating or at least dissuade some students from using technology to cheat. Some of the technologies that are used to thwart cheaters are website like Turnitin. com, use the Internet to disseminate disinformation, and even the extreme of electronic cages. The availability of texts on-line makes it far easier for students to cheat. The technology has been manipulated to address Internet plagiarism (Sheridan, 2005). There are now websites that check uploaded papers to see if the contents are plagiarized. Teachers no longer need to know their students’ writing styles or the breadth of their vocabulary to detect plagiarism (Niell, 2006). The main service among plagiarism detection web sites is Turnitin. com. The service checks around 70,000 papers a day from both high schools and universities (Niell, 2006). Turnitin. com is also the underlying website that is used for University of Phoenix’s Plagiarism Checker. Institutions are signing on to the Turnitin. com service at fairly fast pace. The service makes a digital fingerprint of papers submitted and compares that fingerprint against a database. The papers are then scored for percentage of plagiarized wording. All submitted works become part of the database as well (Sheridan, 2005). This technology is impressive and will contribute to academic honesty, but two issues arise from this service. First, academic honesty is based on an honor code. The honor code is built on trust. Submitting all papers to a plagiarism website fosters a culture of guilty until proven innocent (McCarroll, 2001). Also, there are some grumblings from students about Turnitin. com. The claim is Turnitin. com is misusing their intellectual property by incorporating all submitted papers into the services repository (Pereira, 2006). This service may stem the tide of Internet based plagiarism. Some professors have taken the cheating epidemic into their own hands. They have used the Internet against the very students that use it to cheat. Professors at University of Maryland posted responses to 30 test questions. The responses were riddled with false answers (Read, 2004). Of the 400 students taking the test 12 had copied the answers directly. Staff at the university applauded the professors’ scheme, but some professors and students are claiming the professors actions are ethically questionable (Read, 2006). Posting incorrect answers on the web uses the Internet to employ an old strategy of misinformation. Another way to curb cheating is to block cell phone use. Since the mobile phone is one of the main devices used to cheat during test, some education institutions have looked into electronic cages or Faraday cages (Meilke, 2006). The Faraday cage is named after the physicist Michael Faraday. The cage or shield could be constructed around test halls to prevent mobile devices from receiving outside transmissions (Meilke, 2006). The cage would prevent any electromagnetic fields form penetrating the test hall. This would render all mobile communication useless (Yaqoob, 2006). The problem with this technology is that some students have good cause to carry a cell phone and may need to receive an important call from family. Another way to deter mobile communication would be to use metal detecting devices or other equipment to sense wireless phone transmissions (Yaqoob, 2006). Conclusion Most students recognize the need for a good education and therefore conduct themselves honorably. Academic dishonesty has created a challenging situation for educators. The misuse of well-intended technology has further contributed to the proliferation of inappropriate academic behavior. But for those individuals who attempt to excel scholastically, or simply to attain average performance, by adopting dishonest practices, measures have to be taken to stem the tide. Many learning institutions have implemented standards of academic behavior that is shared with all students, education on the various forms of cheating or plagiarism, and the punishment that would be exacted upon the offenders. By so doing, a clear message is sent to those brazenly dishonest people, while allowing fair-minded students to derive the benefits of a wholesome education. References Barlow, D. (2006). Quotes On Being a Liberal I am a liberal. Im not a partisan, not a Democratic Party hack. Im not trying to advance anybodys agenda. Washington Post, August 27, 2008 On Her Appearance Im not that pretty. Women on television are over-the-top, beauty-pageant gorgeous. Thats not the grounds on which I am competing. Washington Post, August 27, 2008 Im not Anchorbabe, and Im never going to be. My goal is to do the physical appearance stuff in such a way that it is not comment-worthy. The Village Voice, June 23, 2009 On Fox News The one time Fox News ever asked me to be a guest was when Madonna made news by kissing another famous female, Britney Spears. They thought I had expertise, maybe. I said, No, duh. The Guardian UK, September 28, 2008 On Being a Political Commentator I do worry if being a pundit is a worthwhile thing to be. Yeah, I’m the unlikely cable news host. But before that I was the unlikely Rhodes scholar. And before that I was the unlikely kid who got into Stanford. And then I was the unlikely lifeguard. You can always cast yourself as unlikely when you’re fundamentally alienated in your worldview. It’s a healthy approach for a commentator. New York Magazine, November 2, 2008

Paper 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

Paper 2 - Essay Example Compared to both Steve and Brandon, Dawn is seen as the victim of naivety brought about by lack of support from the appropriate quarters (George & Trimbur 113). The two boys represent the Goths and Monsters talked about by both Hines and Cohen in their respective essays. They are monsters in the sense that they represent what young people end up becoming and the notions that they entertain in their lives. Welcome to the Dollhouse shows that X (use of Dawn) is a portrayal of the challenges that teenagers face when they are discovering their maturity. The film portrays the two male characters (Steve and Brandon) who are Dawn’s centers of interest at different times in the movie, are a representation of the Goths mentioned in Hine’s essay. These two characters fuel Dawn’s desire for recognition which spawns her quest for sex with either of the two, which she believes will gain her acceptance. Dawn is also a representation of the monster (Y) mentioned in Cohenâ€℠¢s seventh thesis. The article Goths in Tomorrowland by Thomas Hines addresses the issues and challenges facing young adults and teenagers in their formative years of crossing over to adulthood. In the article, Hines extrapolates on how the youth, try to carve an identity for self by going through a trial and error stage which requires them to experiment with various aspects of their lives. â€Å"The body alterations that young people use to assert that they are no longer children successfully frighten grown-ups, but they also convince them these weird creatures are well short of being adults. The ring through the lip or the nipple merely seems to demonstrate that they are not ready for adult responsibility. What they provoke is not respect but restrictions† (Hine page-71). This is shown in the scene where Dawn embraces the notion of having sex with Steve after being told by her only friend Ralph that its sex that boys want from girls. After this revelation there is manipulat ion of light around Dawn especially around her face to indicate enlightenment or discovery of the secret behind getting a boyfriend. The source of this information is also made to be significant in the sense that Ralph is sitting in front of a computer. The computer represents the alternative that teenagers result to for guidance on issues that have been neglected by adults. Ralph notices the new resolve on Dawn’s face, and he offers himself to her as an alternative, but she out-rightly rejects him. To enhance the feeling of disappointment for the viewer, when Ralph bows his head, the brightness of colors around his personal space is dimmed. This aspect is further advanced by dull grey color of the wall behind the desk he is seated on in the room. When Dawn enters Ralph’s room and finds him seated at the computer, his position is from Dawn’s standing point of view from an elevated angle. This is indication of Ralph’s status and meaning to Dawn; she might be in need of his opinion but she does not hold him in high enough regard to consider him in her stature. In this scene, there is the use of color intensity alteration to help bring out the difference between two friends who are in a similar situation but have differing solutions to address their common problem of lack of friends (George & Trimbur 186). When Ralph is offering his advice to Dawn, his dull colored shirt seems brighter from Dawn’s perspective through which this instance in the scene is

The Case Study of Aalsmeer Flower Auction, Introducing an Information Essay

The Case Study of Aalsmeer Flower Auction, Introducing an Information System - Essay Example A range of facilities are available at the auction, such as access to marketing channels and financial information, storage facilities and management of logistics. Prices of flowers are determined at these auctions because it offers a nodal point where suppliers and buyers can meet, and the prices set at the auction are also used in other parts of the world as price indicators. The auction also provides a place where growers who bring their flowers in large quantities at optimum transportation costs and can then break them down into smaller quantities for specific buyers and thereby improve efficiency. While this has been a good arrangement for several years, certain developments have created a problem situation where the level of business at the auction may be compromised. These developments are as follows: (b) While growers are able to achieve efficiency by getting savings in transportation costs, retailers are unable to achieve similar efficiencies because consumer tastes are changing and in order to satisfy those changing tastes, retailers need access to fresher flowers, smaller quantities, larger number of varieties and more than one delivery every week, thereby making the supply based auction unviable in a situation where demand might need to drive supply. (c) The voice of retailers and their changing demands has become sharper, because of the mergers and acquisitions among them. Growers are also becoming more interested in using electronic means to sell their products. In view of the above, the Alsameer Flower Auction has felt the threat to its existing business processes and experienced the need to bring about structural and operational changes to improve their market share, strengthen their connection with wholesalers and retailers, reduce the transaction costs and enable innovation. In order to achieve these aims, the

We recall that Phaedrus response to the Palinode is principally aesthetic, ... he does not question Socrates about the conclusions he reached (p. 258). So if the second half as a whol e seems to
